The 4L60E (RPO M30) series of automatic transmissions from General Motors is a 4-speed overdrive automatic transmission designed for RWD, 4WD, and AWD vehicles.
The 4L60E is the electronically controlled version of the 700R4/4L60 (RPO MD8), produced from 1982-1993.
The 4L60E was phased in as the 700R4 was being phased out starting in 1993 for trucks, vans, and SUVs, then in 1994 for passenger cars.
Starting in 1996, a bolt-on bell housing and a 6-bolt tail housing replaced the one-piece case and 4-bolt tail housing for S-10 trucks and Blazers, then in 1998 for all other applications. How To ID A 4L60E
